Vodafone offers new improved BlackBerry Storm 2 at £30 a month
Monday, 12 October 2009, 12:21
RIM, maker of the must-have executive email gadget the BlackBerry, will this week unveil its second attempt to break into the touchscreen market which has become so dominated by the Apple iPhone.
But the Canadian company, which has teamed up with Vodafone in the UK for the phone, is hoping that the Storm 2 handset will get a more positive critical reaction than the first version that went on sale in last November.
The original BlackBerry Storm was famously blasted by technophile Stephen Fry a diehard Apple fan who told his followers on Twitter that the device was "shockingly bad. I mean embarrassingly awful." He believed that the phone had been rushed out "unfinished" by RIM and it was a view that many other critics came to hold when they got their hands on it. With the BlackBerry Storm 2, which will go on sale in Britain this week, RIM reckons it has solved many of the problems that bedevilled the original device. It has upgraded the touchscreen, which fuelled many complaints in the original device, and made it far more responsive.
The BlackBerry Storm 2 is expected to be available to customers willing to sign up to a long term contract with Vodafone at £30 a month.
At that price it is cheaper than the iPhone and another eagerly awaited touchscreen, the Palm Pre.But the big driver of smartphone take-up is likely to be the fact that Orange has broken O2's two-year exclusive deal with Apple and will be stocking the iPhone in a couple of weeks. Analysts reckon the move could spark a price war, especially as Vodafone will get its hands on the device at the start of 2010.

Majority of Companies Will Ignore Windows 7 Upgrade, Research Says
Tuesday, 14 July 2009, 10:48
According to desktop and server management company Scriptlogic, 6 out of 10 businesses will most probably choose to retain their OS and avoid Windows 7 upgrade. The research, which was participated by more than 20,000 IT executives from 1,000 firms, revealed that 60 percent have no plans of installing Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 7. Among the reasons cited were time and resources, as well as application compatibility and deployment/migration issues. Companies are also aiming to save costs by holding on to their installed OS. Around 66 percent of those polled further said one of the most effective cost-cutting measures is disregarding OS upgrades. Only 29 percent said the perfect way to cut cost is software investment. Furthermore, 5.4 percent of the participants said they plan to install Windows before the end of 2009. About 33 percent intends to implement Windows 7 upgrade by the end of next year. Read more
Microsoft Extends XP Availability in New PCs
Tuesday, 14 July 2009, 10:44
Microsoft has decided to lengthen the disposal of XP operating system in new PCs for another six months. In addition, users who want to downgrade from Vista Business or Ultimate to Windows XP would be able to do so until the end of July next year.Microsoft originally planned to cease XP distribution to major computer manufacturers after January 31, 2009. The company, however, opted to alter their policy and granted a six-month extension to XP. System builders would not get the same reprieve and would not be able to install Windows XP on the computers they assemble.Windows XP circulation has been put on hold last year to give way to Vista's end-user licensing agreement. Nonetheless, this did not stop users to downgrade from Vista to XP. A Microsoft spokeswoman revealed that XP would most likely be given another extension after July 2009. Read more

Wednesday, 05 November 2008, 11:06
With the release of Small Business Server 2008, Microsoft shows signs of understanding that small businesses have a wider range of server options than ever before. For most small companies, SBS 2008 will provide the basic functions necessary for the business in a package that is easy to set up and administer, and that integrates readily with Microsoft Windows Vista and XP clients. The purchase price won't be as low as Linux, but the polish and ease of use are both high, and the single-user CAL makes SBS 2008 the most affordable SBS yet. Microsoft has been listening - and this time, it shows.
